Oh happy baby

So someone thought it would be funny to wake up this morning at 3:00am! She was just sitting in her crib, entertaining herself, wide awake and ready for a bottle. So mommie got up, half asleep and made a bottle. Fern sucked it down and was back to sleep in about 10 mins. Never once did she cry. I LOVE THIS BABY! Of course, guess who slept through it all...daddy! Unfortunately for me, Jer is an extremely heavy sleeper. I´ll make sure to give him some late night shifts when we bring her home - don´t want him to feel left out!

It is now 11:30am - she is upstairs taking a little cat nap. Tonight, after they pick her up, we are going out to steak restaurant. I think mommy has earned a bourbon drink!

That´s all for now...we leave the hotel tomorrow morning at 6:15am...so probably no more posts from me. I´m just going to enjoy my last afternoon with little miss sunshine!
Love to you all.

Another day almost over

And we had a POOP! I´m sure you all wanted to hear that..but we were getting a little worried as she was a little behind schedule! I suppose you can say we are official parents because our conversations are about poopies!
Another beautiful day - weather has been perfect - not that we´ve been out much, but we did spend some time in the courtyard today for some fresh air.

Although this has been a fantastic visit and we are sooo glad we came..it really has been mentally exhausting. It is hard being couped up in a hotel room with a 5 mon old, trying to learn the ropes, give medicine and keep her entertained. We meet a couple yesterday that has been here for a week. Forget that!

Tomorrow they come pick her up at 6pm. I better get the tissues ready..!

She really has been so wonderful for us (I think she realized we were idiots and clueless so she took it easy on us!) Here are more pics...

Even more pics!!!

Some more pics to share. I don´t want to jinx anything, but man, this baby can sleep at night. We´re just elated, nothing but smiles for miles. Bathtime was much better this morning, we tried the shower method and it was a little less traumatic, she got through it like a champ, and look at that hair!!

we´ll have more pics later.

More pics....

Check out the teeth!

So bath time did not go WELL... Very tramatic, sreaming bloody murder at the top of her lungs to be sure all of Guatemala City heard it! Obviously I didn´t give her a bath like Ms. Rosa does - oh well...at least she is somewhat clean.

Jer did not give you the full details of our meeting with the foster mom and atty. Seems Fern has a chest cold..and arrived with three different kinds of medicine. I was frantically trying to write down some notes - which one to give when, what each one was for...PHEW..very overwhelming for a first time mommie! I even had to be the horrible monster and wake her up in the middle of the night to give her some meds.

Yesterday there must have been a big soccer game in town..and Guatemala won. Apparently the local tradition down here is to drive around town at all hours of the night, honking the horn and screaming out the window. You would have thought they just won the World Cup!

That´s all for now..better go check on Daddy to see how he is managing.
Thanks to everyone for your support and wishes!

The Fern Report

Things are going well, Fern slept the whole night through!!! I woke up at 6 and she was calmly entertaining herself, trying to grab those footsies..(I know that keeps me entertained for hours)

When we met with the attorney and the foster mother yesterday they gave us some pointers and just a few things we should be aware of. One of which was ´´Shes a wonderful baby, and doesn´t fuss unless she doesn´t get what she wants´´ uh, so does that mean we´ll have to buy a car when she´s 16, cause if Daddy can´t afford a new car, nobodies getting a new car, guess she´s just gonna have to be fussy then, who am I kiddin, she´s already got me wrapped around her little pinky.

I can´t beleive how much we´ve lucked out, Fern is smiley and content, and honestly doesn´t really fuss at all, last night before bed she made a little noise but that was just because she was sleepy.

Don´t worry folks, all your kisses and hugs have been equally distributed.

This morning she really responded to me singing Little Feet´s - Dixie Chicken, theres a southern girl in there somewhere, next lesson is how to properly prepare eastern NC BBQ, ok so maybe we need to wait a little bit on that one...

Now where did I put that little tiny skateboard...??

We´ll report back later, its now bath time in central america.

The moment you´ve all been waiting for

We´re a happy family, we´re a happy family, we´re a happy family, Me, Mom and Dad!!
Everyone is doing fine, Fern just had a snack, she has a bit of a cold, but no big deal, she seems like she´s known us forever. A very happy day for all of us.

Now we wait...

Hello family & friends...

We have an hour until they arrive. We´ve been to the market, unpacked our bags and had a beer (to calm the nerves!). Jer´s picture below is the courtyard and I´m attaching pic of the hotel. Now, I know you folks don´t care about pictures of the hotel..you want to see pictures of Fern...well you will have to wait a few more hours too!

So far everything has gone smoothly - our flight actually landed 10 mins early. The hotel is very quaint, they provided us with a crib and we have a little kitchenette area. Tonight´s dinner will consist of tasty Wholefoods pasta and cheese toast!

More to come later...

p.s Susie...Mark was right!!!!!

just a test

just testing out putting pics up on another computer
(and in another language to boot.)

we´re here!!!!

we made it, just got to the hotel, we´re off to the market to grab some things and then only a few short hours until the big visit.

we´ll post back soon with pictures.

The Countdown Begins

Less than 24 hours to go....... Alright, I'm starting to get jittery now.
Should I really feel like I'm going to pass out every time I see that little girl in those pictures?
Is it time to go yet?

the living bubba

Bubba lives on Selina's dashboard. He came from one of those vending machines in the grocery store, you know the same one that you can buy a super bounce ball, or stick on fingernails, only in the south can you buy a little redneck at the grocery store.
"Hey honey, get some bread, some milk, and pick up a little redneck while you're there." I took a picture of him. Ya'll are going to get real sick of me posting dumb pictures like this. This is your warning.

more on the bath

Let me just tell ya, that the pictures don't even come close to describing the mayhem and madness that is taking apart a 50 year old bathroom. Charlie and Mike, I owe you guys more than a 12 pack, maybe I'll get you guys a keg, maybe a beer truck, maybe we should just go for a swim at a brewery.

Behind that tile, lays an absurd amount of concrete, plaster and grout, behind that is a wire mesh attached to the studs and all that happy cement and mud. Lovely, what big fun this is going to be. We were able to work in chunks, developing a method as we went, this is all unconquered terriority here so we kept discovering things along the way (i.e. the squirrel skeleton and the super ghetto wiring of my bathroom)

The floor tile had at least an inch and a half of the same stuff underneath, I really don't know how the house was supporting all this weight, oh yeah, our house has solid oak joists, old school baby, the only way to roll.

Things learned:
A squirrel cannot live in the space between the first and second floors, at least not for long.
Dust can permeate anything and everything.
My allergies really don't like dust, in fact it turns me into Captain Snot Rocket.
Smashing bathtubs with a sledgehammer can be pretty damn fun.

Bye Bye Bathroom....

PHEW! What an exhausting two weekends - the house was covered in dust. A BIG BIG shout out to Charlie and Mike. You guys ROCK!!!

Some really gross dead thing they found behind the wall. Perhaps a squirrel??

Let's get this thing started....

Hello to all. Hopefully my Mom is reading this which means she is getting more and more computer savvy - clever her!

Well for those that haven't heard...we are planning a visit to Guatemala. (yes, we are freaking out!) We thought this site might be a great way to keep ya'll in the loop while we are in Guatemala City. HOPEFULLY we will be able to access the blog from the hotel computers (keep fingers crossed).

Our trip is scheduled for Sept 27 - Oct 1. They provide only the formula and we have to bring everything else, needless to say I've been spending some time and money at Babies R' Us!

Please check back periodically for updates, stories, and hopefully pictures of my beautifully remodeled bathroom (can't wait!).

p.s Thanks Kate & Jon for being such fabulous bloggers and inspiring us!
